The role of VCAM-1 adhesion molecula in community acquired pneumonias

Objectives. The aim of investigation was to define the role of adhesion molecules VCAM-1 in patients with community acquired pneumonia and to compare the level of CD-106 expression on leukocytes with the severity of the disease and meanings of laboratory and clinical characteristics in the studied cases.
Materials and methods. The VCAM-1 expression level was evaluated in 30 patients of the ICU department of Vitebsk emergency care hospital with severe community acquired pneumonia of different etiologies. The control group included 15 patients of trauma department without any inflammatory processes and pulmonary illnesses. The studied parameters were: hemodynamics (arterial blood pressure and heart rate measured every 2 hours, central venous pressure every 4-6 hours), the parameters of the biochemical and general blood tests, daily diuresis, general urine analysis, the parameters of respiratory support if any.
Results. A significant (p <0.001) interconnection of expression level VCAM-1 with community acquired pneumonia in comparison to the control group was discovered. The factors affecting the severity of community acquired pneumonia were investigated.
Conclusion. Expression of adhesion molecules VCAM-1 on leukocytes in patients with community acquired pneumonia significantly (p <0.001) increases, in some cases up to 99% of leukocytes carry cd-106 molecule on their membrane. Some significant factors which affect the severity community acquired pneumonia were evaluated.
